Notable Google Updates that Endangered the SEO Industry
Did you hear about getting easy backlinks in seconds, while others spend the whole day of looking for a blog to post an article on? This method has been used by many people who wants to see some early results. They have many methods in pushing backlinks and one of them is the “Link Farm”. I do not know where they got the name but it sounds crazy.
The arch enemy of SEO is of course the biggest and the most popular search engine, “Google”.
Did you know that Google is not very forgiving nowadays? Google has many updates since the last time it discovered that there are softwares and other methods to get backlinks easily with less effort. This used to be okay but people seem to abusing it so Google has take steps to stop it.
Here are the List of some notable Google Updates that Endangered the SEO industry way back year 2000.
Year 2000
o Google launched their browser toolbar, and with it, toolbar pagerank (tbpr). Google TBPR or Toolbar Page Rank is launched and the google dance begun.
Year 2002
o The monthly Google Dance and Page Rank updates started and almost every web master mad with Google.
Year 2003
o SES Boston – The first named Google Dance update. There were major changes in their algorithm and Google planned to revise algorithm almost every month! It is dancing with Google indeed.
o Cassandra – The Cassandra update is to stop and to stop massive links from just a self-owned domains and they got strict about hidden links.
o Dominic – where Freshbot and Deepcrawler scoured the web.
o Esmeralda – Google dance was replaced with Everflux.
o Fritz – Google switched to an incremental update and index is changing daily.
o Supplemental Index – The results will go on some review before it will be reindexed.
o Florida – Many mad business owners showed up because of their sites being deranked. They sites with keyword stuffings got penalized and deranked.
Year 2004
o Austin – this update cleaned the mess that florida missed to clean up like tag stuffing and the invisible text method.
o Brandy – the anchortext relevance increased, index expansion and the concept of link neighborhoods.
Year 2005
o Nofollow – this update is to harness the spammers from getting link juice from their spammy posts and so on.
o Allegra – LSI tweak was made. Google started to penalize untrusted links.
o Bourbon – this update takes care of the duplicate and non-canonical contents.
o XML Sitemaps – Webmasters are allowed to submit sitemaps giving SEOs more influence over crawling and indexing.
o Gilligan – The fake google update. It is said that there have been no major revision of their method happened.
o Jagger – targets low-quality and spammy links.
Year 2006
o Supplemental Update – changes of how filtered pages were treated.
Year 2007
o Universal Search - Google integrated search results with News, Video, Images, Local, and other verticals, changing their format.
o Buffy – named after a well-knowned google writer, Vanessa Fox.
Year 2008
o Dewey – There were limited evidence that google was pushing its own properties, including Google Books.
o Google Suggest – the first form of Google Instant.
Year 2009
o Vince – update that favored big brands.
o Rel-canonical Tag – Most of the Search engines supported the canonical tags which allows webmasters to send signals to spiders without affecting human visitors.
o Caffeine- major stracture change was made to speed up crawling and indexing.
Year 2010
o Caffeine - Google finished forming the caffeine structure.
o Brand Update – Google started allowing to show the same domain appear multiple times in SERPs.
o Google Instant – Google Suggest is revised and renamed.
o Instant Preview – Google allowed the users to view the landing pages by simply clicking a small magnifying glass icon.

Year 2011
o Freshness update – Google gives 35% impact to fresh contents.
o Panda – a major algorithm upade was made and penalized almost all sites including the site of jcpenny.
o + 1 – allowed users to influence more accurate search results.
o Google + - Google attacked the popular social media site the “Facebook”. Google + took place in sharing content. And is said that they got 10M users in 2 weeks!
Year 2012
o Ads above the Fold – Google devalues sites with unorganized ads. Ads that are just slapped everywhere.
